Cooleman has many underground river passages along with some spectacular gorges that we walk through to access the caves in the area. Some Cooleman caves have the option of swimming through them or doing duck-unders to discover more cave. Bring your thermals if you have them as cave water is very cold. We don’t usually do any ropework here, so beginners are welcome. We often visit:
Getting there
It is about a 3.5 hour drive from Canberra to Cooleman via Cooma, our usual route. There is also the option of taking the Boboyan road, or doing doing some four wheel driving by going via Brindabella. This is the route google maps suggests, however we do not recommend it after heavy rain.
Facilities
Cooleman has two campgrounds very close to blue waterholes. We usually stay at the further one as it is usually less crowded, and closer to some of the caves we visit. The campground’s facilities include a pit toilet and some nice grassy areas to pitch a tent, so pack accordingly.
