Signature is a horizontal alternative to the very vertical Punchbowl; unlike the nearby Punchbowl (to which it was once connected), you can just walk into it. It is named for the numerous old (and not so old) signatures that cover its wall. Yes, I know NUCC’s magazine is called Speleograffiti, but cavers take a very dim view of real speleo graffiti, so please refrain from adding your name to the wall of Signature Cave if you visit.
Signature Cave has two levels. The Upper Level has several spots that are excellent candidates for sardine challenges, and the Lower Level has a phreatic area that makes an excellent hide-and-go-seek area. In fact, the whole cave makes an excellent hide and seek arena for, well, anyone, even uni students who should have stopped playing such games a decade ago..
Most of the formation in Signature Cave has been destroyed over many years of abuse. While much of what remains is muddy and very robust, some of it is still very much alive and growing. If you see formation that is wet, or is sparkly, please don’t touch it, so that it has a chance to grow again.
